GENERAL
From 1997 to
'99 Tom chose to teach part time in order to devote more time to painting.
In 1998, together with Gabrielle Hawkes, he converted what had been
their gallery in St. Just into The Turn of the Tide Studio.
In December 1999 he took up the opportunity of early retirement from
teaching and now his painting is his major occupation.
His involvement as a painter in the cultural life of his community
is the realisation of a long cherished ambition. |
ARTISTS STATEMENT
Current
themes of my work.
Most days I'm working on a piece that celebrates some aspect of living
in this very special coastal environment.
I also find time each day to go out and discover endlessly new facets
of the landscape that will find their way into future paintings.
Living near the Atlantic, coastal forms are of course something I
return to again and again I'm fascinated by the interplay of the sky
with the body of land or sea beneath it.
The significance of each tree in an area where they are relatively
rare and the patterns created by traditional agriculture in this part
of Cornwall are also themes of current interest to me. Many other
aspects remain for me to discover afresh through painting.
Working methods.
In feeling my way towards a painting I make many sketchbook jottings
and also use both a camera and a computer to develop ideas for the
composition.
The studies function as something like the score of a piece of music
( I nearly always listen to Bach while I'm working). The interpretation
of this "score" is what is involved in the painting process back at
the studio. So I am aiming to translate what I have selected into
the language of painting. |
