ARTISTS STATEMENT
Born in Great Yarmouth in 1964, I moved to Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk,
and studied Art and Design at Ipswich College of Arts. For a number
of years my main subject matter was the nude figure.
The move to Falmouth to study fine art led to a renewed interest with
the sea and it's surroundings.
Now based in Porthleven with a studio in nearby Helson at the Creftow
Co-Op Gallery, the Lizard Peninsular and it surrounding area have
become the subject matter for most of my paintings. The changing mood
of the sea, together with it's energy are important elements within
the paintings.
Mainly working on location, it's about "catching that moment"; the
untamed mood of nature that entices us to all of these beautiful coastal
locations, be it in winter or summer, in the rain or shine.
My paintings are about the emotions and the feelings that the image
invokes. The colour, texture and speed of the medium become the underlying
factors of interpretation.
Some of my works explore these ideas through experimentation with
the colour gold and the images of sunflowers.
Gold carries with it a heavy sense of suggestion. The containment
of history; its virtuous and decorative qualities, its connection
to alchemy, make it a difficult but intriguing colour to work with.
Sunflowers, especially when they have been uprooted and dried, contain
many qualities that allow a continual involvement with the image.
In my most recent works I have used various sources of imagery and
materials in order to look at these possibilities, as they emerge
through landscape, seascape, or through more conceptual work. |
